The goal of Container Plan 22-30 is to increase step-by-step the container capacity by using available space more efficiently. These optimisations are necessary in order to remain one of the largest container ports in Europe. By doing so, we guarantee the supply of our country and the wellfare of current and future generations.

What is the Container Plan 22-30?

Port of Antwerp-Bruges is working with stakeholders on a Container Plan 22-30 to increase the efficiency of existing capacity. This project is running in parallel to the implementation of major infrastructure works such as New Lock Zeebrugge, Extra Container Capacity Antwerp and the Europa Terminal. The focus of the action plan is on smarter use of current capacity and a smoother flow of containers in and around the Antwerp and Zeebrugge platforms.

How will we do that?

The Container Plan 22-30 is a port-wide action plan that Port of Antwerp-Bruges is rolling out in phases with its customers and other stakeholders. The first phase focuses on 'operational excellence' of the container chain. In the medium term, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is also looking at some spatial optimisations.

Operational excellence

The Container Plan 22-30 has a strong focus on 'operational excellence'. This will be done by optimising operations (including lowering 'dwell times', the times containers spend on a terminal) and making scheduling more transparent and reliable. Another part of the pla is to share information more consistantly between the differet links in the logistics chain such as terminals, shipping companies, operators, shippers and freight forwarders.

Met het Containerplan 22-30 wil Port of Antwerp-Bruges de huidige capaciteit simmer benutten en de doorstroming van containers vlotter maken.

1. Better information on and insight into the nautical chain.

Pilots, towage services and traffic managers work closely together with shipping agents to guide ships and cargo safely and smoothly into the port.

With the strategic programme 'Chain Operations Viewed Differently Antwerp-Bruges', Port of Antwerp-Bruges is building a transparent and resilient nautical chain along with chain partners in a data and community-driven manner.

2. A shift towards more uniform processes

Along with its stakeholders, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is working to become more unified and transparent. This will contribute towards a more efficient container chain and clarity for all users of the port.

The ETA Terminal tool, one of the first outcomes of the container plan, compiles on one page when container ships arrive (ETA) and when Antwerp's terminals can receive the containers. This will provide additional transparency and visibility for players in the logistics chain.

3. A greater focus on digitalising the container chain

Port of Antwerp-Bruges is playing a pioneering role in the further digitalisation of the logistics chain, thus remaining prepared for the future.

In recent years, both the Port Community System C-Point and NxtPort have laid a solid foundation for digitalising the operational information flows at the port. The objective is to share data among the various players in order to make the container chain in the wider port context cheaper, safer and more efficient.

4. Buffer capacity and corridor approach

The combination of Zeebrugge's direct coastal location and Antwerp's location 80 kilometres inland provide fast and sustainable connectivit to the European hinterland. The port is multimodally connected by road, rail, inland navigation and pipelines.

The Flemish government and Port of Antwerp-Bruges are strengthening the intermodal offering to and from the Flemish ports through the Inland Navigation Stimulus Programme. By working together on key shipping routes, we can combine volumes and achieve smoother handling at container terminals.

Spatial optimisation

In the medium term, the Container Plan 22-30 will endeavour to make smarter use of existing space. In order to achieve this, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is facilitating infrastructural and spatial optimisations at terminals handling containers.

The Container Plan 22-30 works on spatial optimization of the existing container terminalq.
