Have you ever wondered how toys, televisions, clothing, food and computers find their way into your living room? Containers are a familiar and convenient way to transport these kinds of products. Port of Antwerp-Bruges is even the second largest container port.

Accessible to the largest container ships

Port of Antwerp-Bruges smoothly receives the world's largest container vessels. Good draught and smart use of tides makes the port accessible for ships up to 23,000 Twenty foot Equivalent Unit (TEU).

TEU is a standard size and means that on a container ship there is storage space for 23,000 sea containers that are 20 foot long. The containers' fixed size offers a major advantage. It means that the containers can fit on seagoing vessels, trucks, inland navigation vessels and train carriages.

Containerplan 22-30

The Container Plan 22-30 consists of strategic interventions that optimise capacity and operations. This project runs in parallel with the realisation of major infrastructure works such as Nieuwe Sluis Zeebrugge, Extra Container Capacity Antwerp and the Europa Terminal. The focus of the action plan is on smarter use of current capacity and smoother flow of containers in and around the Antwerp and Zeebrugge platforms.

Investments in new automatic stacking cranes (ASCs) and quay cranes at DP World will lead to a capacity increase of 30% — without any extra square metres.

Added value

You will find a range of empty container depots in the port. Besides the storage of empty containers, these container depots also offer other value-added services. For example, cleaning of containers and tanks, repairs, inspections and modifications with a view to a sale or rental.

Each container depot has its own speciality in handling dry freight containers, reefer containers and tank containers.

Certified Pick up

Certified Pick up is a digital platform, developed by NextPort, for container release based on encrypted identification and authorisation. The central data platform generates an authorised pick-up based on identity, which the final carrier uses to pick up the container. This authorised pick-up is is not created until the final carrier is known. This makes container handling even more secure and ensures transparent data exchange within the logistics chain. Moreover, the platform makes the entire process verifiable for the competent authorities.
