Much industry is located in or around ports and is highly dependent on efficient import and export flows. For Port of Antwerp-Bruges, it is therefore important that European port policy closely aligns with broader European industrial policy.\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Competitiveness and an open investment climate</h3>\nPort of Antwerp-Bruges welcomes the fact that competitiveness is put forward as the first priority. At the same time, an attractive and open investment climate remains essential for the further development of ports. International investments play an important role today and in the future in port infrastructure and industrial activities. Security considerations must be taken seriously, but new European initiatives should not lead to increased regulatory pressure or gold-plating that would undermine the investment climate.\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Ports as energy hubs</h3>\nThe strategy also highlights the role of ports as hubs for the energy transition. For Port of Antwerp-Bruges, this is particularly relevant. Transshipment decreased slightly (-4.4%), due to changes in shipping schedules by carriers. In total, nearly one in ten containers arriving at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is a fully operational reefer container. This underlines the importance of the Cold Chain to the port. \nConventional refrigerated transport shows a strong annual growth of 4.9%. While imports show a slight decline (-0.7%), exports of conventional refrigerated goods exhibit a significant increase (+52.5%). This reflects both strong market demand and a well-developed logistics network.\nApproximately 90% of reefer imports consist of freshproducts, including fruit, vegetables, and meat/fish. The majority of these goods originate from Latin America. Panama recorded strong growth this year (+122.8%), while imports from South Africa also increased significantly (+36.2%). In terms of exports, the United States remains the most important destination. Exports of fruit and vegetables to Egypt rose sharply (+206.7%).Morocco shows remarkable growth, both as a country of origin and as a destination. In contrast, Ecuador recorded a decline in import volume (-21.8%),and exports to Russia decreased (-25.4%).\nExports from Europa, mainly Belgium, theNetherlands, Germany, and France, consist primarily of frozen products shippedto various destinations across multiple continents.\nPort of Antwerp-Bruges’ Cold Chain approach washighlighted during Fruit Logistica in Berlin. Together with the ARRRA region – Antwerp, Rotterdam, Rhine and Ruhr – this area accounts for 40% of European industry. What is under pressure here is under pressure across Europe.\n<h5 data-mce-fragment=\"1\">Europe is losing industrial strength </h5>\n\nIn recent years, major industrial players such as BASF, ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies and Envalior have had to scale back their activities. At the same time, strategic investments have been withdrawn, such as that of Vioneo. These are not isolated cases, but clear warning signals that the European investment climate for industry is structurally deteriorating.\nHigh energy and carbon costs, lengthy and uncertain permitting procedures, and an uneven playing field compared to imports from regions with lower standards are putting even innovative and clean projects under pressure. As a result, Europe is already losing industry, jobs and momentum in the climate transition.\n<h5 data-mce-fragment=\"1\">Competitiveness as a guiding principle</h5>\nFollowing the Antwerp Declaration and the Clean Industrial Deal, Port of Antwerp-Bruges now also endorses the Antwerp Call to Alden Biesen, where the European summit will take place tomorrow. Europe must now take action: swift, concrete and coordinated measures within the framework of the Clean Industrial Deal, including competitive energy prices, protection against carbon leakage, fairtrade conditions and accelerated decision-making.\nWe call upon policymakers to set clear priorities and to apply one guiding principle when developing new initiatives: strengthening the competitiveness of EU industry. In this context, the chemical sector deserves explicit recognition as the “industry of industries” — the foundation of Europe’s value chains and a cornerstone of its economic resilience and strategic autonomy.\nIn this context, we appreciate the support of the Flemish and federal governments and of Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who, as a member of the Board of Directors of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, helps defend the strategic importance of our port and industry.
