Port of Antwerp-Bruges welcomes Flemish and German governments for discussions on energy transition and industrial cooperation

On 27 June, Port of Antwerp-Bruges welcomed representatives of the Flemish Government and the government of North Rhine-Westphalia for a joint governmental session at Port House in Antwerp. This coincided with the Energy Talks, a dialogue between policymakers and business leaders on topics such as cross-border energy infrastructure and the implementation of the European Clean Industrial Deal in our region. The choice of location was no accident.

 and the logistics crossroads in the flow of products and shipments to the hinterland, Port of Antwerp-Bruges forms an essential link in the (industrial) cooperation between Flanders and North Rhine-Westphalia.

A Gateway to Europe and a link in the chain of sustainable industrial growth

Within Europe, Germany is Port of Antwerp-Bruges' main export partner and the second-largest country of origin of imported goods. Thanks to reliable connections by rail, inland navigation and pipelines, the port is heavily intertwined with the industrial regions of Germany, and North Rhine-Westphalia is one of its most important partners. The port's strategic partnership with duisport (Duisburger Hafen AG), the world's largest inland port, strengthens that connection. Together, the ports are investing in cross-border infrastructure and green industrial corridors. Port of Antwerp-Bruges is therefore not only an essential trading platform for the German economy but also a logistics and industrial hub within Europe.

Energy transition is no longer a vision for the future, but an urgent reality and Port of Antwerp-Bruges is taking the lead in that regard. For example, it is building a large-scale carbon transport network, and is investing in facilities for the importation of low-carbon hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and biofuels. By 2030, Port of Antwerp-Bruges aims to import one million tons of hydrogen equivalents a year – not only for Belgium, but also as an energy source for industrial clusters in Germany and in other European countries.

All these projects are actively enabling the European Clean Industrial Deal, the focus of which is to create a competitive and climate-neutral industry, to become a reality. In addition to investments, this transition requires stable long-term policies and cross-border cooperation. The close relationship with Germany and duisport is a tangible example of this.

During the government session, Flanders and North Rhine-Westphalia confirmed their shared ambition regarding renewable energy, the circular economy and knowledge sharing. The Energy Talks brought these goals to life and emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships. 

Port of Antwerp-Bruges sees this multilateral cooperation as a key to success. In a context of geopolitical tensions, scarce raw materials and competitiveness, Europe's ports have the potential to become stable anchors of energy security and climate resilience. At the same time, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is poised to act as a bridge between continents, further strengthening Europe's sustainable future.

It would not only closely connect research institutions, developer ecosystems, start-ups, and SMEs in both regions, but also create new innovation spaces, value chains, and international competitiveness. LoRa: plenty of possibilities, little energy Paragraphs Title What is LoRa? Heading type H2 Text LoRa is a wireless transmission system that uses radio waves to send data, such as temperature sensor readings . "A number of gateways at carefully selected locations in the port pick up the signals from the sensors," says Johan Deleu, Wireless Solution Architect at Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The gateway transmits measurements from the sensor to a dashboard. This enables people to read the sensor information clearly and easily.   Title Five years on a single battery Heading type H3 Text The main advantage of LoRa is that it is energy efficient. "We have a groundwater sensor in the Haasop nature reserve that uses LoRa technology. This means that we can cover the entire port with a network of ten gateways. LoRa networks cannot support long conversations or videos, only short messages. It is perfect for emergency signals or measurement results, and the reason why Port of Antwerp-Bruges is already using the technology at various locations in the port. Title From shelter to lifebuoy Heading type H2 Text For example, in nature reserves, where LoRa gateways send groundwater measurement results to a dashboard. The photo shows a dry period now, in contrast to the heavy rain in previous months. This allows nature conservationists to monitor water levels without having to go out into the field themselves. When the ship is in the lock, the shelters offer a cool place for the boatmen to rest on hot summer days. If it does get too hot in a shelter, a sensor on the door and a LoRa gateway can be used to immediately check whether the door is open. This means that technicians need not be dispatched unnecessarily to repair the air conditioning.    In addition, there are lifebuoys with a sensor in the buoy's housing. If the sensor see that the buoy is gone, the LoRa gateway sends a signal so someone can check what is going on. We are working on the  local production   of hydrogen  and derivatives. This is how we are testing new technologies and have the first significant green hydrogen streams available. The plant will convert electricity from partners Parkwind and Eoly Energy into green hydrogen gas for the natural gas grid, industrial users at home & abroad and for balancing Elia's electricity grid. By combining locally produced solar and wind energy and purchased green electricity, they can produce 12,500 tonnes of liquid and gaseous green hydrogen per year for the European market. Using captured CO₂, natural gas is converted to blue hydrogen and stored underground. With the A@C consortium, which also includes Kairos@C from BASF and Air Liquide, work is ongoing on the necessary CO₂ infrastructure to make this possible.  Title 1.3 Renewable energy imports Heading type H4 Text There is not enough wind or solar energy in Belgium and Western Europe to supply the port and all its users with green energy. This means we need to import renewable energy from regions where sun and wind are available in large quantities.   We are therefore committed to the global  supply or  importing of hydrogen and its carriers   from   countries such as Chile, Oman, Namibia, USA, Canada, Egypt or Brazil. There is a surplus of green electicity from solar and wind energy there. The  global spread  of these regions ensures that Belgium and Europe are  less dependent  on a small number of countries for their energy supplies. We expect the first imports in 2026.   The Hydrogen Import Coalition , comprising leading players such as DEME , Engie , Exmar , Fluxys , WaterstofNet and Port of Antwerp-Bruges, recently presented a detailed roadmap for hydrogen import in Belgium. This ambitious strategic vision provides insight into possible future scenarios and the associated infrastructure development. Heading type H5 Text You can import energy in the form of hydrogen bound to another molecule. Port of Antwerp-Bruges is committed to importing large volumes of sustainable hydrogen (carriers) , such as liquid hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, synthetic methane and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC's). The latter substance is a pure transport molecule for hydrogen . At the port, we convert these substances back into pure hydrogen that we can use as a raw material or fuel. Fluxys is working on an open-access hydrogen pipeline connecting Antwerp and Zeebrugge with the German hinterland and the other neighbouring countries. Any company can connect to an open-access pipeline. We are reducing the CO₂-emissions of our own fleet by investing in hydrogen or methanol-powered tugs and taking a closer look at the energy efficiency of our buildings and operations.  We are working together with the port community and partners to make the port more climate-friendly  by focusing on  shore power  and alternative fuels, building a factory that captures and reuses CO₂, further focusing on the  circular economy  with projects such as NextGen and finally by taking on a pioneering role in the  hydrogen economy  with initiatives such as an open network of hydrogen pipelines.
