Why car brands such as Mazda (continue to) choose Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Mazda reaffirms its strong ties with Port of Antwerp-Bruges. As such, the car manufacturer makes use of the port's extensive short sea network and the efficient and sustainable processes at terminals such as ICO.

Strategic choice

Mazda has maintained a close partnership with Port of Antwerp-Bruges for over 30 years. In August, the first shipment of the fully electric Mazda 6e arrived at International Car Operators (ICO) in Antwerp.

The new model, a five-door saloon, is being distributed by the Japanese carmaker to Belgian dealers by road. For European dealers outside Belgium, Mazda relies on the port’s extensive shortsea network. Cars depart from Antwerp to Germany, but also to Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland. Zeebrugge serves as a distribution point for Norway, Sweden, Ireland and Finland.

We regularly assess whether we are still using the most strategically located port for the distribution of our brand. The combination of location and added value makes Port of Antwerp-Bruges an essential part of our logistics puzzle.

Sustainable shipping as a priority

Mazda makes a conscious choice for sustainable transport solutions. The Mazda 6e arrives on LNG-powered ships from shipping company MOL, which significantly reduces its carbon footprint. At ICO, these ships are bunkered while unloading and loading take place. That advantage promotes the efficiency and sustainability of logistics processes.

ICO Terminals: flexibility and customisation

As a terminal operator in both Antwerp and Zeebrugge, ICO offers a wide range of services tailored to the specific needs of OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), such as Mazda.

For the Mazda 6e, we were asked to perform a market-specific technical intervention, limited to vehicles destined for certain countries. Thanks to our infrastructure, we provide this additional service at our terminals, fully tailored to each unit’s final destination.
