Optimization of Inland Navigation Processes

Port of Antwerp-Bruges is continuing to digitalize and optimize inland navigation processes. This optimization consists of two key components: the electronic processing of voyage notifications and the introduction of a central lock reservation system. Valuable insights gathered during previous feedback sessions with stakeholders have been incorporated into the further development of these initiatives.

Electronic Voyage Notification

Since December 10, 2022, inland navigation has been required to report every voyage electronically via eRIBa. Port of Antwerp-Bruges aligns its operations with this legal requirement.

In practice, this means that voyage notifications submitted via eRIBa are automatically integrated into the systems of Port of Antwerp-Bruges. As a result, it is no longer necessary to report via VHF when entering the port.

Central Lock Reservation

In the new system, lock reservations are handled digitally via APICS Barge. The electronic voyage notification is automatically visible in this application, after which a lock reservation can be scheduled.

Users who do not yet have access to APICS Barge can contact a central helpdesk. This helpdesk assists with obtaining access and can also make lock reservations on behalf of users if needed. Additionally, it provides support if voyage notifications do not appear in APICS.

The APICS Barge application is designed to make life easier for inland skippers and fleet managers.

APICS Barge makes your life as a bargemaster or fleet manager easier.

Objective of the Optimization

With these changes, Port of Antwerp-Bruges aims to:

  • Maximize the reuse of already available voyage data
  • Reduce communication via VHF
  • Standardize communication regarding availability, capacity, and timing of lock operations
  • Streamline digital and operational processes

Implementation

APICS Barge is currently being adapted to this new workflow. At the same time, the central helpdesk is being set up. The launch of these new processes is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2026. Further communication will follow through the usual channels, including the inland navigation newsletter.
