New Lock Zeebrugge

The new lock in Zeebrugge is needed to guarantee stable and secure second nautical access to the inner port.

Initiator(s)

Flemish government, co-funded by Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Duration

From 15/07/2016

Location

Zeebrugge

Why?

The project has three major objectives:

  • The construction of a new lock, at the site of the present Visart lock, which will provide a second nautical access to the inner port. This will ensure that business and jobs will be anchored in the region for the long-term.

  • The construction of the new road 'Nx', which separates through-traffic and port traffic from local traffic. This improved mobility will reduce the current traffic congestion in and around central Zeebrugge.

  • An improvement to the existing infrastructure and facilities in the project area to ensure liveability. This will make it pleasant to live and work here after the works are complete.

The project not only provides economic security, but also eliminates uncertainty about the future among the surrounding community. Port of Antwerp-Bruges realises that the project will have a major impact, both during and after the works. Precisely for this reason, we want to be a good neighbour to the residents of the project area, and an ally for the other nearby projects. In this regard, we always set great store by cooperation, dialogue and up-to-date information.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges anticipates a final project decision describing the sub-projects and the timing of the implementation project in the next legislature.
