These mainly come from Asia and Europe and find their way to destinations worldwide, such as America, other European countries and Africa.   In 2024, firms in the port handled 7,838,441 tons of metal products, which equates to as much as 73% of the total tonnage of breakbulk (excluding RoRo). The form of shipping used is flexible and can be adapted, based on the infrastructure available at the receiving ports. Increased rail connections for Port of Antwerp-Bruges Paragraphs Title More frequent services on the Antwerp-Catalonia Rail Connection with Hupac Heading type H2 Text From 16 September 2024 onwards, Hupac will increase the frequency of services on the existing rail connection between Antwerp and Catalonia. In cooperation with Lineas as a traction partner, services will now run 10 times a week . First in Antwerp port area: bike path constructed using electric machines Paragraphs Heading type H2 Text The new bike path on Malagastraat on the Right Bank, with a total length of 1,500 meters, is being paved by road construction company  Colas . Of this, 350 meters (1,000 m 2 ) will be completed using an electric asphalt paver, two electric rollers, an electric excavator, and an electric truck. Compared to traditional machinery, this can  reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 90% , depending on the energy mix. Paving is one of the most CO 2 -intensive aspects of constructing a new bike path, alongside the production process itself. The Antwerp-Bruges Port Authority focuses on reducing direct emissions by making buildings climate-neutral and greening the fleet. Additionally, it aims to reduce indirect emissions, such as those caused by infrastructure works on roads, quays, buildings, and bridges. This involves seeking out more sustainable materials and promoting zero-emission construction sites. This pilot project with electric machines is a first step in gaining experience and knowledge, providing better insight into the logistical and technical challenges associated with zero-emission construction sites. The bicycle plays an important role in commuting. The Antwerp port area has an extensive network of over 200 km of bike paths. To further increase the number of cyclists, every company must be accessible safely and comfortably. In 2021, Port of Antwerp-Bruges announced that it would invest more than 40 million euros over the next 10 years to further improve cycling infrastructure in the port area. Dit kadert binnen onderhoudswerken voor fietsinfrastructuur en een ambitieus klimaatplan waarbij Port of Antwerp Bruges inzet op het terugdringen van zowel de directe als de indirecte CO₂-uitstoot. Het is de eerste keer in België dat een combinatie van verschillende elektrische machines wordt gebruikt voor een fietspad van zulke grootte. De Universiteit Antwerpen ontwikkelt een tool om de uitstoot tijdens deze werken te monitoren.

Heading type H3 Text Hydrogen gas (H 2 ) is barely to be found on Earth, but hydrogen atoms are hidden in larger compounds with other elements. Extracting the  hydrogen from these molecules  requires a lot of energy.    Depending on the energy source used for its production, we distinguish between  grey, blue and green hydrogen . In addition, a number of chemical and refining processes in our port also produce hydrogen as a useful by-product. This type is also known white hydrogen. If you get that electricity from renewable energy sources , no CO₂ is released. This energy is released once more when the hydrogen gas reconnects with other atoms. This is what makes hydrogen is an  energy carrier . This means we need to import renewable energy from regions where sun and wind are available in large quantities.   We are therefore committed to the global  supply or  importing of hydrogen and its carriers   from   countries such as Chile, Oman, Namibia, Egypt or Brazil. There is a surplus of green electicity from solar and wind energy there. The  global spread  of these regions ensures that Belgium and Europe are  less dependent  on a small number of countries for their energy supplies. We expect the first imports of hydrogen in 2026.   To this end, we are joining forces with  Deme ,  Engie ,  Exmar ,  Fluxys , and  WaterstofNet  in the  hydrogen import coalition . This focuses on concrete projects that shape the production, transport and storage of hydrogen. Port of Antwerp-Bruges is committed to importing large volumes of sustainable hydrogen (carriers) , such as liquid hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, synthetic methane and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier. The latter substance is a pure transport molecule . At the port, we convert these substances back into pure hydrogen that we can use as a raw material or fuel. Through the PIONEERS project , we are testing port equipment that runs on electricity, hydrogen or methanol.
