Oil spill in the Deurganck Dock and the Scheldt: Operational Coordination activated
- An oil spill occurred during a bunkering operation in the Deurganck Dock. Although the source has been stopped and the directly involved seagoing vessels have been contained for active clean-up operations, the pollution spread further towards the Scheldt overnight.
Impact on shipping and environment
- The Scheldt is currently fully closed to traffic between buoy 80 (above Noordzeeterminal) and the entrance to the Deurganck Dock. The Zandvliet and Berendrecht locks are also closed due to the presence of oil slicks.
- In addition to the source location, vessels at the Europaterminal, several inland vessels near the Galgenschoor area, and a tugboat have been affected. There is also a risk of impact on nearby nature areas.
- As a result, the port is currently not accessible via the Scheldt.
- We regret the impact of this incident on our port and the vulnerable nature areas along the Scheldt. Protecting our environment is an absolute priority, and we are doing everything possible to minimise both operational and ecological damage.
Escalation and response
- To streamline coordination between all involved services, Operational Coordination has been activated in consultation with the Harbour Master. Emergency services are fully mobilised and are focusing on containment and clean-up operations.
Further communication
- Updates will be shared on this website as soon as more information becomes available.
