Liquid bulk declined 13.5%, hit by weaker petroleum derivatives exports to West Africa and persistent weakness in the European chemical sector. Volumes of biofuels and energy gases continued their growth. The decline in LNG traffic, resulting from the European ban on the transshipment of Russian gas, was partially offset by higher imports from the US. Recent announcements in the European chemicals industry underline the continued pressure on the sector.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dry bulk (-8.9%) was primarily impacted by weaker fertiliser shipments, partly offset by increased imports from Russia and Morocco, the former ahead of the introduction of new EU duties. The RoRo segment grew by 3.3%, supported by rising imports of new cars from China – despite European import duties introduced at the end of 2024 – as well as higher volumes of trucks and used vehicles. This growth was primarily driven by containers and liquid bulk. However, since the summer, the impact of US import tariffs has become apparent: exports fell in the third quarter, particularly for steel, which declined by more than a third compared to the second quarter.</p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Imports remained stable for the time being, supported by a sharp increase in liquid bulk and a threefold rise in LNG volumes. This reinforces Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ role as a gateway for alternative energy flows replacing Russian gas. Port of Antwerp-Bruges launches Breakbulk Summit in 2026

Crisisupdate: pilots’ action and national strike cause disruptions in the port Paragraphs Title Update 20/10/2025 - 08:00 Heading type H2 Text There is no longer any congestion for outgoing vessels, and the backlog for incoming vessels has almost been cleared. In Antwerp, there are still 23 vessels without a confirmed schedule and 15 experiencing delays this morning. In Zeebrugge, operations are no longer affected. Title Update 18/10/2025 - 08:00 Heading type H2 Text In Antwerp, there are 52 vessels this morning for which no planning is yet known and 23 vessels experiencing delays. In Zeebrugge, there is no longer any impact.   Title Update 17/10/2025 - 08:00 Heading type H2 Text Although congestion is gradually decreasing, the scheduling of vessel arrivals and departures is still being affected. The services of Port of Antwerp-Bruges are doing everything possible to minimize the impact, but disruptions are expected to continue until after the weekend. Text items Title Antwerp: 16/10/2025 - 08:00 Heading type H2 Text Due to the ongoing go-slow action by unionized (sea) pilots, available capacity is limited, disrupting the restart of a smooth nautical chain. The actions are expected to continue until Sunday. Clearing the backlog caused by the various actions will take several more days. Title Zeebrugge: 16/10/2025 - 08:00 Heading type H2 Text The go-slow action by coastal pilots is continuing, though with little impact for now. Delays resulting from earlier actions are expected to be cleared by late afternoon. Background color Transparent Text items Title Antwerp: 15/10/2025 - 20:00 Heading type H2 Text In Antwerp, operations are impacted by the “maximum rest” action of sea pilots. As a result, the logistics chain is operating at about 70% of normal capacity. Start-up is particularly difficult between 17:00 and 08:00. All locks and bridges are fully operational, as is the Port of Antwerp-Bruges towage service, which is running at 100% availability. Despite this operational capacity, congestion persists on the Scheldt, with 60 outbound and 128 inbound vessels. Title Zeebrugge: 15/10/2025 - 20:00 Heading type H2 Text In Zeebrugge, congestion is also reported. At present, there are three outbound and six inbound vessels. Pilotage services are operating 24 hours a day, with a 12-hour rest period for the pilots. Background color Transparent Title Antwerp: 15/10/2025 - 08:00 Heading type H2 Text As of this morning, ships are once again scheduled for arrival and departure. The pilots’ organization BVL has temporarily suspended its actions until October 24 at 07:30 a.m. and has resumed normal operations in the meantime. A gradual improvement will therefore become noticeable, although the availability of the different pilot corps will likely not be fully known until late afternoon. The suspension of actions by other organizations within the Pilots’ Front is not yet fully clear. At present, more than 60 ships are waiting to depart and around 100 ships are waiting to enter the port. It is too early to estimate how quickly the situation will improve; clearing the backlog will take several days. The sinking of the fifth tunnel element has been postponed to a later date, which means there will be no temporary closure of the Kallo Lock and the Upper Scheldt. Text items Title Antwerpen: 14/10/2025 - 20:00 Heading type H2 Text In Antwerp, inbound and outbound maritime traffic for both sea-going and inland vessels is suspended until October 15 at 07:30. The Port Authority’s towage services are operating at 80% capacity (6/2/1). VTS and passage planning are fully functional, and all locks and bridges are operational except for the Kallo, Kieldrecht, and Boudewijn locks. Current congestion amounts to 96 inbound and 55 outbound vessels. Following the industrial actions, shipping traffic will gradually resume during the night. From 07:30 onward, inbound and outbound movements will be optimized within the limitations of the ongoing punctuality actions. At 21:00 tonight, outbound lock operations for all lock complexes on October 15 from 07:00 will be published, followed by inbound operations. Available capacity will be maximized for inland navigation. Disruptions are expected to persist as long as the actions continue, and clearing the backlog will take several days. Title Zeebrugge: 14/10/2025 - 20:00 Heading type H2 Text In Zeebrugge, maritime traffic to and from the port is possible. However, the tender services using SWATH vessels are suspended until October 15 at 09:30. Pilotage for liner shipping (LKW) is carried out in line with the ongoing punctuality actions and only during office hours. The Vessel Coordination Centre Zeebrugge (VCZB) is fully operational, and inbound and outbound movements, shifting operations, and lock usage are proceeding normally. Current congestion amounts to six inbound and four outbound vessels. Background color Transparent Text items Title Antwerpen: 14/10/2025 - 09:00 Heading type H2 Text In Antwerp, maritime traffic for both seagoing and inland vessels remains suspended until October 15 at 07:30. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges towing service is operating at 50% capacity. Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and passage planning continue to operate at full capacity. All locks and bridges are functioning normally, with the exception of the Kallo Lock and the Zandvliet Lock, which are temporarily out of service. In terms of congestion, there are currently 83 inbound and 49 outbound vessels registered. Title Zeebrugge: 14/10/2025 - 09:00 Heading type H2 Text In Zeebrugge, maritime traffic to and from the port is currently possible. However, the pilotage service is not operational, and tender operations with the SWATH vessels have been suspended until October 15 at 09:30. As a result, pilotage is temporarily unavailable. The Vessel Traffic Center Zeebrugge remains fully operational, but large LNG shipping is suspended. Inbound and outbound traffic, shifting operations, and lock usage remain possible for exempted vessels. Regarding congestion, there are currently 7 inbound and 4 outbound vessels registered. Background color Transparent Text items Title Antwerpen: 13/10/2025 - 20:00 Heading type H2 Text In Antwerp, maritime traffic for both seagoing and inland vessels is currently suspended until October 15 at 07:30. Flemish pilots are not operational due to a work-to-rule action and a closure in the Zandvliet sector. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges towing service is operating at 90% capacity. All locks and bridges are functioning normally, with the exception of the Boudewijn Lock and the Zandvliet Lock, which are out of service. In terms of congestion, there are currently 76 inbound and 34 outbound vessels registered. Title Zeebrugge: 13/10/2025 - 20:00 Heading type H2 Text In Zeebrugge, maritime traffic to and from the port remains possible. Pilotage operations are conducted in line with the work-to-rule actions, meaning service is limited to office hours. The Vessel Traffic Center Zeebrugge is fully operational, and vessel movements, shifts, and lock operations are proceeding as normal. Congestion in Zeebrugge remains limited, with 6 inbound and 3 outbound vessels. Background color Transparent Text items Title Antwerpen: 13/10/2025 - 15:00 Heading type H2 Text Due to union actions at the Zandvliet Traffic Control Center, maritime traffic – including inland navigation – to and from Antwerp is suspended from Monday, October 13 at 19:30 until Wednesday, October 15 at 07:30. This afternoon at 13:00, coordination began with inbound vessels bound for Antwerp to prepare for the planned suspension, allowing vessel traffic to be gradually brought to a halt by 19:30 this evening. Departure clearances are also being adjusted in line with this action. To comply with the imposed suspension, vessels – both seagoing and inland – will not be able to pass through the locks towards the Scheldt during this period. In the coming hours, we will gain more clarity on the impact of the strike on our own services, such as the operation of bridges, locks, and the towing service. Title Zeebrugge: 13/10/2025 - 15:00 Heading type H2 Text The actions by the pilots continue unchanged, but subject to additional union actions by partners, it currently appears that vessel traffic will again be possible, albeit with the same restrictions. The situation will be reassessed around 19:30 this evening.
