The number of accidents at level crossings in the port has decreased significantly in recent years. Under the slogan "Red = stop", Infrabel, Port of Antwerp-Bruges and various stakeholders are calling on truck drivers to strictly respect traffic rules and signs in the port.

Clear message

The new awareness campaign transmits a clear message: 'Red means stop. Always.' There are accidents every year, sometimes fatal, as was the case in 2024 at the crossing on Noorderlaan in Antwerp, when a truck driver lost his life after a collision with a locomotive.

There are about 1,000 kilometres of track in the Antwerp port area alone. In Zeebrugge, there are 130 kilometres, with a total of 20 level crossings. In 2024, there were 9 accidents at level crossings in both port areas.

Master Plan for Safe Rail Crossings

To improve traffic safety, Port of Antwerp-Bruges is elaborating the "Master Plan for Safe Rail Crossings" in close consultation with stakeholders. This plan focuses on two key areas; visible and efficient quick wins, including road markings and signs, and structural interventions at high-risk level crossings where accidents are more frequent, such as the installation of gantries and traffic lights. The first interventions will begin this autumn.
