New rail connections to northern Italy and France

Switzerland-based intermodal rail operator Hupac is enhancing the rail network between Zeebrugge and northern Italy. They are launching a new train service to Piacenza and increasing the number of services to Busto Arsizio and Novara. From now on, trains to Antwerp will depart from Lauterbourg, France.

Northern Italy

New connection to Piacenza

Hupac wants to offer their customers more options in terms of intermodal services. This means there is more flexibility, reliability and stability. The new train service will depart from the CLdN terminal in Zeebrugge from Piacenza in northern Italy via Switzerland, running twice a week.

Increased train frequency to Busto Arsizio and Novara

In addition, Hupac is increasing the frequency on two existing links.

  • The train to Busto Arsizio, which departs from the P&O terminal in Zeebrugge, now has six round trips per week, instead of five.
  • The train departing from the CLdN terminal in Zeebrugge for Novara now commutes ten times instead of nine.

Shortsea connections with the United Kingdom

Thanks to these high-frequency connections, Italian exporters can reach the United Kingdom more easily for exports. This is because rail connections in Zeebrugge are aligned with regular shortsea connections to the United Kingdom.

From Zeebrugge you can easily reach the United Kingdom via short sea connections.

New connection from Lauterbourg to Antwerp

From now on, trains to Antwerp will depart from Lauterbourg, France, located along the Rhine. Bolloré Logistics, Haeger & Schmidt and the Lauterbourg Rhine Terminal (LRT) launched the new service. Over the course of the year, the new train service should become a regular connection for imports and exports. The connection came about with the help of Fret SNCF and shipping company MSC.

The Lauterbourg Rhine Terminal has existed since 2018 and is accessible by road, rail and water. Currently, the terminal offers a storage capacity of 80,000 TEU per year. That figure may double in the future.
