Hydrogen import coalition maps out roadmap for hydrogen import in Belgium

Port of Antwerp-Bruges, a current energy hub, plays a crucial role in the plans to become fully climate-neutral by 2050. Given the limited availability of solar and wind energy in Belgium and Western Europe, it is clear that local production will not be sufficient to achieve these ambitious goals. Therefore, Belgium is focusing on the import of hydrogen and its carriers, such as ammonia, from countries like Chile, Oman, Namibia, Canada, and Brazil, where abundant green electricity from solar and wind energy is available.

The recently presented roadmap of the hydrogen import coalition is the result of close collaboration between the coalition partners and intensive dialogue with multiple stakeholders. The roadmap provides insight into various scenarios for future hydrogen import and the associated infrastructure development. Furthermore, it outlines the immediate steps to be taken and the measures to be implemented in the coming years to bring this ambitious vision to life.
