Hydrogen import coalition maps out roadmap for hydrogen import in Belgium

The hydrogen import coalition, consisting of leading players such as DEME, Engie, Exmar, Fluxys, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and WaterstofNet, recently presented a detailed roadmap for the import of hydrogen in Belgium. This ambitious strategic vision provides insight into possible future scenarios and outlines the immediate actions and measures required to transform Belgium into a climate-neutral energy hub.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges, a current energy hub, plays a crucial role in the plans to become fully climate-neutral by 2050. Given the limited availability of solar and wind energy in Belgium and Western Europe, it is clear that local production will not be sufficient to achieve these ambitious goals. Therefore, Belgium is focusing on the import of hydrogen and its carriers, such as ammonia, from countries like Chile, Oman, Namibia, Canada, and Brazil, where abundant green electricity from solar and wind energy is available.

To realize this vision, DEME, Engie, Exmar, Fluxys, and WaterstofNet joined forces in 2019 to form the hydrogen import coalition. This coalition focuses on concrete projects aimed at the production, transportation, and storage of hydrogen, contributing to strengthening Belgium's position as a global leader in sustainable energy.

Scenarios for the future

The recently presented roadmap of the hydrogen import coalition is the result of close collaboration between the coalition partners and intensive dialogue with multiple stakeholders. The roadmap provides insight into various scenarios for future hydrogen import and the associated infrastructure development. Furthermore, it outlines the immediate steps to be taken and the measures to be implemented in the coming years to bring this ambitious vision to life.

The hydrogen import coalition emphasizes that these collective efforts will not only strengthen Belgium's position in the global energy market but also play a crucial role in achieving climate goals and promoting sustainable development on a global scale. The roadmap forms a solid foundation for further action and collaboration towards a greener and more sustainable future for Belgium and the rest of the world.
