Market assessment on the strategic allocation of additional container capacity Antwerp
Container throughput at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges continues to grow in the long term. The Extra Container Capacity Antwerp (ECA) Project will, in the coming years, create additional sustainable, multimodally accessible infrastructure to support this growth in a future-oriented manner.
Our vision for the future of new container capacity
Based on an extensive preliminary process, collaborations, market studies, and internal analyses, Port of Antwerp-Bruges has developed a vision for the optimal use of the new container capacity. Today, we present this vision to the market with the aim of reaching agreements with parties that are best positioned to fulfill the future ambitions of Port of Antwerp-Bruges in the container segment.
Why this market consultation?
Port of Antwerp-Bruges is taking the next important step in the realization of the ECA, by presenting these visions to the market and by investigating whether there are equivalent and alternative overall solutions for the allocation of additional container capacity, in line with all preconditions and objectives of the complex project. The general interest of the port must always be kept in mind, as well as strengthening and safeguarding POAB’s strategic position.
These visions are made concrete in a base case scenario, which assumes, market-conform compensation for the capacity lost due to the configuration of the ECA and, in addition, the allocation of new container handling capacity to the existing tidal container terminals. The proposed solution guarantees growth for all terminal operators and maintains a level playing field for all shipping companies active on the platform, which are decisive in attracting demand and, therefore, additional volumes.
Aim
If applicable, market parties can submit an alternative and well-founded proposal, :
- Which is equivalent to the base case scenario.
- Meets all preconditions.
- Offers a realistic overall solution for the new ECA capacity.
Submission date
Proposals can be submitted in writing until July 31, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Why invest in additional container capacity?
Container traffic in Antwerp has been growing for decades. International forecasts consistently confirm that this growth will continue. Without additional capacity, the port risks losing its competitive position and volumes may shift to foreign ports.
Why invest in Antwerp when investments are also being made elsewhere?
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is a crucial link in international logistics. By continuing to invest in capacity and infrastructure, we strengthen our position and remain attractive to customers worldwide. This ensures sustainable growth, employment, and added value for the region. With the ECA project, we create space to accommodate future growth and remain a leading player in the global logistics chain.
Why are we already starting the commercial process?
Given the scale and investment size of the ECA project, it is essential to secure timely commitments from future partners. This allows us to optimally align the development of the terminal with the realization of the new sites and ensure a smooth connection to future revenue streams.
Why is Port of Antwerp-Bruges conducting a market request?
Based on thorough analyses, we have developed a clear vision for the optimal use of the additional container capacity. With the market request, we want to determine whether there are alternative, equivalent solutions that contribute to the general port interest and further strengthen our strategic position.
Is the base case scenario final?
No. The base case scenario is a well-founded reference framework. Through the market consultation, we are open to equivalent alternatives, provided they serve the general port interest.
Who is financing the ECA project?
The ECA project is a public initiative, financed by Flanders, MLSO (Maatschappij Linkerscheldeoever), and Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Terminal operators invest in their own terminals and take on commercial commitments to justify public investments.
